6 Tips for Small Spaces

1. Scaling Your Furniture
Prioritize the most important piece of furniture in your room. In the bedroom it's your bed, in the living room it's probably the sofa. In other words, your sofa should be the biggest scaled furniture. Try not to bring in too many small furniture pieces, like an armchair, stool, coffee table. Bigger and less is more here. 😉 Rather have key pieces, which you have chosen consciously and the room will feel more spacious and open.

Wall mounted furniture, like a sideboard or bedside table will free up the floor and make the room feel visually much more spacious. The eye can see under the furniture, which gives the impression that the room is larger than it is.

2. Reflective Surfaces
Mirrors make a room so much bigger, but not all mirrors are equal. Use soft, blurry mirrors for living or dining spaces. Antique mirrors are suitable here, or one where the back of the glass has been hand painted and coated with metal leaf to create a beautiful mirror texture. This type of mirror is called 'Verre Eglomise' and is especially good if you have kids, as there are hardly any fingerprints visible.

You can use a large clear mirror in your home gym or a small bathroom to make the space feel larger.

Highly polished surfaces, such as a tile floor or table surface, also have a reflective effect when the light shines on them. And while they may not have as big an impact as a mirror, they still make the room brighter and lighter. And last but not least, integrate mirrors into joinery, like a cupboard. It‘s a win win, the room feels lighter and you also have a mirror to check your outfit 😉

3. Flooring
If you can go for large format slabs, if you are doing stone in your room definitely do that because by having the large format it feels a lot more seamless and by having less grout lines it also feels a lot less fussy and the overall effect if that is that your room will feel bigger.

Also go bigger with rugs! You want to be able to get the front legs of your sofa. (IT'S A MUST!) If you have a rug that doesn't fit underneath your furniture it almost feels a litte stamp in the middle of your room and visually your room will shrink. So, GO BIG ON RUGS!!

4. Go Bold!
Just because you have a small space doesn‘t mean that you have to keep everything white , white walls, light furniture etc. Dark colours in a small room also have the added benefit that it kind of diffuses the perimeter of the room. Dark feels dramatic but also cozy. summer.
